Reader's theatre

Reader's theatre is a style of theatre in which the actors do not memorize their lines.  Rather, they either go through their blocking holding scripts and reading off their lines, or else sit/stand together on a stage and read through the script together.  In Reader's theatre, actors use vocal expression to help the audience understand the story rather than visual storytelling such as sets, costumes, and intricate blocking.

According to some drama teachers, plays have built-in strategies to help students improve their reading skills.  The acting out of dialogue causes readers to work more closely with the text to project and interpret meaning into the reading experience.  Consequently, students gain improvement in vocabulary, comprehension, and retention.  Reading in a small group provides reading role models which is also proven to improve reading skills in students.  Research has shown that Reader's theatre can improve reading fluency, word choice and comprehension.

Our classes in grades 1-5 will be performing Reader's theater throughout the month of February.  So far, the students really seem to be enjoying Reader's theatre.  Our first play was about Benjamin Franklin.  I will post pictures and we do the plays.  Below are pictures of the 4th and 5th grade students.

Ft. Smith Quiz Bowl Tournament

We went to Ft. Smith with two Junior High Quiz Bowl teams and played some of the best teams from Arkansas and Oklahoma.  The highlight of the tournament play was a loss to Collinsville in sudden death overtime.  We all learned some new things about quiz bowl,  and about what we can do to be a better team.  After tournament play, we headed to Judge Parkers courtroom and the Gallows in Fort Smith.  We finished up with a great dinner at Mike's Place in Conway.  STUDY STUDY STUDY:-)
